Ways to Deal with a Difficult Boss

Nowadays, in the workplace more and more people have to deal with a difficult boss. Most of the time bosses tend to be rude, pushy or just down right abusive. Unfortunately, this type of behavior results in many people becoming extremely low in self-esteem and end up living in constant fear.

It also affects people's personal life outside of work, which can have harmful effects because they could start to have complete control over your human needs such as putting food on the table! Although, most of the time we cannot completely change the behavior of a difficult boss we should never allow a boss to control our lives.

Thus, listed below are numerous strategies that can be adopted in dealing with a difficult boss:

Approach your boss at the right time

Make sure that when you have to discuss issues with your boss that you do it at an appropriate time. Do not approach them when they are in a meeting or when everyone is sitting having lunch, make sure that it is in a quiet place where their full attention can be given

Do not react

It is extremely important that you do not react to any personal attacks that are made on you by your boss. When a boss makes a personal attack on you they are trying to get you to respond with an emotional reaction. It is crucial that you do not react in this way because they only thing it does, is enable you to become an easy target for more personal attacks from your boss.

The more appropriate way to react is to acknowledge the attack and then just move on. For example, if your boss hits you with an abusive attack or harsh criticism then just reply by saying “You are right, I am sorry”. By doing this it means that they will not lash back at you because you have side stepped their comments rather than meeting them face on.

Be professional

It is important at all times to be professional with regards to your boss. For instance, you do not need to like your boss or be their best friend but you must above all be professional by getting all your work done and carrying out their exact instructions.

Discuss, do not confront

If a boss criticizes your work then do not become confrontational about it because all this does is create more conflict. Try to ask their advice or discuss how you should be doing something because in most cases a boss criticizes your work because they believe that there is a better way of doing it.

Evaluate you own performance

Before you go to your boss to complain ensure that you evaluate yourself first. You should ask other people that you work with if you are doing things right and if they feel that your work can be criticized in anyway. By doing so, it enables you to establish if there is any truth in what your boss is criticizing you about.

Praise your boss

It is crucial that you praise your boss when they do things right. Many people feel that bosses should never receive praise because they are the ones that should be praising you. This is incorrect. Most bosses appreciate it when they receive constructive, relevant feedback from employees so try not to be nervous about doing this.

Document everything

It is crucial that you document everything that happens with a difficult boss because this will be your evidence for when a complaint is made in the future. Make sure that you document all interactions with them and also your own activities and achievements.

Gather support

If it is the case that other people feel the same about your boss as you do then ask for their support. This is a good idea because a boss finds it easy to ignore or fire one person that has issues with them but if there are a number of you with the same issues then is extremely difficult. Using a union to gain support may be a good idea.

Highlight things to your boss

Make sure that you try to highlight or show your boss things that they are doing that is effecting your motivation and creating an unhappy atmosphere within the workplace. Also, make sure that you provide specific things that the boss can do to make positive changes.

Leave work at work

It is extremely important to leave all work related issues at work and not let them interfere with your personal life. If you do not keep these two separate then it results in you becoming more stressed, which will not help any issues you have with a difficult boss.

Always have a backup plan

It is crucial that you always have a backup plan before you deal with any conflict with your boss. This back up plan could be for example, another job offer, which means that if the discussions do not go well, then you can just walk away. If you do not have this back up plan then your boss will know that you have no where else to go and this will give them much more power over you than what they already have.
