Ways to Deal with Difficult Colleagues

It is fair to say that almost everyone comes across a colleague that is impossible to work with. Most of the time this type of colleague is arrogant, stubborn, abusive and believes that they are right about everything. It is also extremely difficult to deal with this sort of person but there are a number of things that you could do to such as:

Talk to them privately

Ask the difficult colleague if you can have a talk with them privately. Make sure that it is in a quiet area where you can not be distracted. Make sure that you and the other person remain calm, listen, respect each other’s views and have a good conversation.

Understand that you might be part of the problem

It is crucial to recognize that you may be apart of the problem too so do not just assume that your colleague is all to blame.

Do not gossip about the difficult colleague

It is essential that you do not discuss or gossip about the difficult colleague to other members of staff within the organization. Also, when you gossip about someone you always comment on their worse parts which means when you think of this person your patience is shortened and this means it is harder to resolve problems with them. This will only disrupt the workforce and make it more difficult to fix the situation.

Ask for help

In some cases the colleague may become so difficult to work with that you may need to ask for help from your manager. It is important that you do not go to your manager and say that the colleague is a bad person, just highlight the fact that you are not getting along with each other and it is affecting the rest of the workforce. Ask them for help or suggestions on how to resolve the problem.
